Disney+ has recruited actresses Belén Cuesta and Gemma Whelan for the series “Balenciaga,” the service’s first Spanish period drama, Deadline reported.
The story will revolve around fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga and the keys that led him to success and worldwide recognition. On the other hand, the Spanish media Fotogramas specified that "Balenciaga" is a provisional name.
Whelan, known for her work as Yara Greyjoy in “Game of Thrones,” also echoed the news on her Instagram. “Hey @disneyplus,” she wrote in the caption.
The specialist media outlet reported that the drama programme will consist of 6 episodes of 50 minutes each. Alberto San Juan will get under the designer's skin. "Taking part in this project is a luxury: for the character, for the scripts, for the directors and for the team in general. It is a challenge for everyone. As always, but a little more. It is almost like filming three films in four months, in several languages and with a time gap of several decades between the beginning and the end. In short: a joy!" said the actor in an interview with Fotogramas.
José Mari Goenaga, Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi served as directors of the project whose filming began in June and will last until September 2022, in various locations in Spain and France.
Belén Cuesta and Gemma Whelan will also play two imposing women. The Spanish actress, who played Julia in “La casa de papel” will play Fabiola de Mora y Aragón before becoming Queen of Belgium. Balenciaga designed her wedding dress in 1960. In turn, the 41-year-old British actress will play Prudence Glynn, a journalist for The Times newspaper.
At the same time, the French actor Patrice Thibaud will play Christian Dior and the production also includes Josean Bengoetxea, Cecilia Solaguren, Adam Quintero and Elvira Cuadrupani.
