Paraguayan teachers call for strike to demand a salary adjustment

If the teachers do not receive a response during the strike days, September 17 and 18, they will call for another strike.

Teachers in Paraguay's public schools have called a strike for September 17th and 18th to demand an 8% salary increase and a larger education budget in 2027.

Teachers affiliated with the Federation of Educators of Paraguay (FEP) made the call this Tuesday, and plan to organize a large mobilization.

The president of the FEP, Silvio Piris, declared to a local media outlet that this large mobilization will be accompanied by a "total stoppage of pedagogical activities" in the educational institutions of the public sector during the aforementioned days.

Furthermore, he criticized the fact that the 2027 budget bill presented by the Executive to Congress on September 1st included a 2,4% salary increase for that sector, while teachers are demanding an 8% increase.

Piris announced that they will request the Ministry of Economy and Finance to incorporate the salary increase through an agenda into the budget project that began to be discussed in Congress.

He asserted that if teachers do not receive a response from the Government during the two days of strike action, they will hold another strike from September 22nd to 24th, coinciding with the new demonstrations by public sector doctors on the 21st and 22nd, who are also demanding salary adjustments.
