Lasso approves a “security” bonus for two years after leaving the presidency

Former president Rafael Correa criticized the dishonesty of the Ecuadorian oligarchy upon hearing the news.

A few weeks after finishing his term, the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, issued a decree so that the former presidents and former vice presidents, as well as their respective spouses, have security once their duties end.

According to the text, the Ecuadorian State must "provide protection and security to former presidents and vice presidents of the Republic and their spouses, for minimum periods of two years for the former and one year for the latter."

The measure affects "both within the national territory and abroad," according to the resolution. The decree also establishes that these personal protection periods may be extended if the Presidential Military Household so deems appropriate.

In August 2021, Lasso had already ordered that State security for former presidents and former vice presidents would only be within the country and for a maximum period of one year.

However, the president decreed 'crossed death' months ago, which gave way to early elections won by the young businessman Daniel Noboa, who will take office in December and must govern until May 25, 2025.

The dishonesty of the oligarchy

Former leftist president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), who resides in Belgium and is the target of judicial persecution initiated by his former ally and successor Lenín Moreno, harshly attacked this measure on social networks.

"This fully demonstrates the dishonesty of our oligarchy: what they deserve, others didn't. With brutal persecution and the high risk that this entails, they took away all my security," he wrote.
