The basis of the appeal

The secret to perfect makeup starts with a good foundation

How many times a day do you see people on the street with heavily made-up faces that look like masks? Well, the main reason for this kind of mess is the incorrect selection and application of foundation, some of which betray the natural look that is sought when using this cosmetic product.

One of the golden rules, according to makeup artist Nancy Vielma, is that your foundation should match your skin tone. To achieve this, test different foundations along your jawline to find the best color, as it will disappear on your skin. Also, apply the foundation to your hands first and then spread it over your face. Next, smooth the foundation with a makeup sponge, being careful not to stretch your skin too much. "Pay particular attention to the area around your eyes, where the skin is very thin. Don't forget to apply foundation to your eyelids and lips," she advises.

To make your foundation last longer, apply a moisturizer as a primer. Dry skin will absorb your foundation if you don't use moisturizer first. For oily skin, use an oil-free moisturizer or a powder foundation. On hot days, it can be difficult to maintain a fresh look. To do so, set your foundation in the morning using a loose powder and a makeup brush. Then, touch up regularly throughout the day.

To cover imperfections, apply foundation first and then dab on a few drops of red-neutralizing concealer. For more noticeable imperfections, such as dark circles or birthmarks, use a yellow-toned concealer. “Don’t use too much powder on the problem area because it will draw attention directly to the spot you’re trying to conceal,” says Vielma, who suggests avoiding a line around the jawline. Apply foundation as usual, then put a little moisturizer on your hands and sweep the line down, massaging the neck area. It will simply disappear.

FOR THE NIGHT, Mix some powder highlighter with your powder and apply it where you want to attract light, such as the bridge of your nose, under your brow bone, your temples, cheekbones, chin, and shoulders. Always use a foundation with at least SPF 15 to prevent sun damage. Change the shade of your foundation if your skin tone changes with age.

After applying your foundation, go to a mirror and make sure it looks natural. Finally, repeat the process in natural light.

VARIABLE CONSISTENCY

The consistency or texture of your foundation should also suit your skin type. If your skin is normal or dry, you can use a foundation containing emollients; if it's oily, opt for a water-based one. If you have combination skin, you should experiment to determine which foundation works best based on the distribution of oily areas. As for the desired finish, choose a thin foundation if you have a fair complexion without blemishes or spots. To cover imperfections, try a thicker foundation to even out both the surface and the color. Avoid using heavy foundations, as they will make you look older rather than younger and will detract from their ability to neutralize, even out, and maintain your skin tone.

FOR EVERY SKIN

NORMAL SKIN: The ideal foundation for normal skin is one that contains emollient ingredients. Young women with normal skin can also use water-based, oil-based, or gel foundations.

DRY SKIN: Bases rich in emollients prevent the loss of moisture and freshness characteristic of dry skin.

OILY OR COMBINATION SKIN: FOR For this type of skin, we recommend above all using a moisturizing liquid foundation that controls excess oil; matte foundations, for example, contain a type of talc that neutralizes the skin's oil, as well as a large amount of water and a texture that helps cover facial imperfections.
