UN calls for mitigating the risks of artificial intelligence and ensuring clean energy for data centers

Stiell called for strengthening international cooperation to address climate challenges

The executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Simon Stiell, urged member countries of the international body on Wednesday to mitigate the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and promote its responsible use.

Similarly, he called for increased energy efficiency and guaranteed clean energy sources for data centers.

During his participation in the session "The future of artificial intelligence management", held within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Stiell highlighted the dual impact of this technology on the energy transition and the fight against climate change.

"On the one hand, it generates new serious risks and emissions, as it causes an increase in the demand for electricity; on the other hand, it offers innovative climate solutions, such as a significant increase in efficiency and a reduction in costs in energy systems," he commented, as quoted by the portal. Sputnik News.

The UN official stressed that AI management must be linked to sustainability goals and contribute to addressing the economic effects of the climate crisis, and warned that the effects of climate change are increasingly impacting the economies and populations of all countries.

"These catastrophes caused by climate change and their growing human and economic costs are the result of humanity continuing to burn enormous amounts of coal, oil and gas, which leads to the terrible greenhouse gases that trap heat in our atmosphere," he said.

In this context, Stiell called for strengthening international cooperation to address climate challenges.
