The state of Táchira has a cattle herd estimated at 660.000 animals, according to data from the Ministry of Popular Power for Productive Agriculture and Lands and the National Institute of Comprehensive Agricultural Health (Insai), stated the governor of the state, Freddy Bernal.

The regional leader indicated that the border state is one of the 12 prioritized in the livestock characterization promoted by the National Government, with the purpose of strengthening sanitary controls and achieving international certification as a country free of foot-and-mouth disease.

He added that the census will also include sheep and pigs, as well as properties throughout the state, in order to accurately reflect the capacity of the regional herd.

He explained that there will be 150 validators deployed at the regional level, in addition to the support of municipal validators, in coordination with Insai and local governments, to complete the official registration in the 29 municipalities of the state.

He also invited producers, universities, research schools, the Bolivarian National Armed Forces, Community Councils and municipalities to contribute to the evaluation of the properties in order to achieve the objectives set in agricultural and livestock matters.

According to the regional authority, this registration serves as preparation for the second cycle of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease, which will begin at the end of 2026.

The first cycle of foot-and-mouth disease vaccination continues

The first vaccination cycle against foot-and-mouth disease in Táchira state began on May 6 and was initially scheduled to run until June 15, with extensions to date. The immunization goal is to reach 90% of the regional herd, projecting the direct vaccination of an estimated 600.000 animals.

According to the governor of Táchira, more than 6.000 producers in the state were called to participate in the first cycle of immunizations, through livestock associations and by registering on the Sigesai platform of Insai, achieving effective results and placing seventh nationally.

national plan

The National Plan for Characterizing the Bovine and Buffalo Herd began its nationwide rollout, which will extend until December 18, 2026.

The livestock characterization has a planned duration of 120 continuous days and is carried out in order to make the inventory of cattle transparent before the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA), enable the sanitary and commercial channels to begin the formal export of Venezuelan meat and register the productive infrastructure, the geographical location of the properties and the inventory classified by ages and purposes, in accordance with what was reported by the Ministry of Popular Power for Productive Agriculture and Lands.
