Landslides and road damage due to rain in Táchira

Heavy rainfall triggered landslides that impacted the main roads of the Andean state

Heavy rains over the weekend caused landslides and damage to roads in the municipalities of San Cristóbal, Torbes, Córdoba and Junín.

On Trunk Road 5, near the La Ranchera sector of El Corozo, a landslide of earth and rock material occurred, causing the temporary closure of this important road that connects Táchira with the state of Barinas.

This was reported by the mayor of the Torbes municipality, Charly Rojas, who indicated that the sediment removal work is being carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Popular Power for Public Works, the Táchira State Government and Civil Protection "to fully restore traffic and guarantee the mobility of all users of this road artery."

Restricted vehicular traffic on the San Cristóbal-Rubio road

In the municipality of Junín, a landslide in the Berlín sector interrupted traffic flow on the road connecting San Cristóbal with Rubio, near the Puente de Oro-La Laguna section, which has been affected by landslides and flooding in recent weeks.

Authorities are working to remove sediment and rocky material in order to restore vehicular traffic, so they recommend that drivers use alternate routes and take the necessary precautions.

Landslide in Santa Ana

In the municipality of Córdoba, in the El Cafetal sector, a large rotational landslide was observed that reduced the channel of the La Ratona stream by almost 50% compared to the usual eight meters of its reach.

Civil Protection officials from Táchira traveled to the site to conduct inspections and assess the impact on at least 10 homes, which were left in a high-risk condition and another 23 in a medium-risk condition. The specialists provided recommendations to the community for continuous monitoring and restricted access to the area.

Additionally, near the El Corozo sector, landslides and fallen trees blocked Ramal 16, reducing traffic to 50%. In response, Civil Protection and the Mayor's Office of Córdoba deployed joint teams to clear the debris and restore traffic flow.

Landslides inspected in La Tinta

In the municipality of San Cristóbal, in the La Tinta sector, a commission from Civil Protection Táchira inspected an old landslide in order to evaluate its conditions and impacts due to the saturation of the land, which affects the homes in the area.

The officials from the prevention agency called on the community to be alert to the situation and follow the recommendations to avoid risks given the current conditions.
