10 soldiers arrested on charges of treason

According to military sources, the detainees are a general officer, 3 senior officers, 2 junior officers and 4 professional troops.

Security agencies arrested 10 soldiers accused of treason, among other crimes.

According to military sources, those arrested are a general officer, three senior officers, two junior officers and four professional troops.

One of those arrested is Brigadier General (Bolivarian National Guard), Rafael Simón García Fernández, who served as head of Zone Command No. 63 of the aforementioned military component corresponding to the state of Amazonas.   

The second in command, Colonel (GNB) Euclides Rafael Gómez Salazar, who was also the Chief of Staff, was also arrested.

The list of detainees continues with Lieutenant Colonel (GNB) Darwin Rigoberto, commander of Air Support No. 63 (Amazonas), as well as Major José Gregorio Santana Olivo, head of the Maintenance and Internal Order Division of the aforementioned zone command.

The other detainees are: First Lieutenant Luis Gerardo Perez Mendoza (commander of the 63-2 Rural Command Detachment); First Lieutenant John Kenner Buitrago Jaimes (commander of the 63rd Urban Security Detachment) as well as Sergeants Angel Alexis Barreto Perez, Keibi Adrian Verenzuela Sandoval, Elvis Joshua Perez Salas and Antonio Jose Gutierrez.

The arrest warrants were issued by the Eighth Military Court of Control of Amazonas under the command of Captain Jorge Daniel Cedeño. The detainees are allegedly involved in the crimes of insulting the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB), against the security of the FANB, aggravated disobedience, abuse of authority and treason.

The incident allegedly occurred at the Cerro Carlos Delgado Chalbaud Border Protection Base, where aircraft from Brazil were allegedly allowed to enter, the source explained.
