Football superstar Lionel Messi announced his official retirement from the Argentine national team on Monday after an impressive career that cemented his status as the most successful player in his country's history. The player shared the news in a statement posted on his Instagram account, where he shared a heartfelt message reflecting on his 20 years representing the Albiceleste.
"After all this time that has passed since the final, and after much thought, I want to announce to everyone that I am retiring from the national team. It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deeply, but I understand that it is the right time," he said.
"I swear I always gave my all, not just in the last few years, when we won everything, but before that too. I always fought and l"I gave up everything for this jersey, to bring them joy and make them proud to be Argentinian through football," he added.
Messi emphasized that he is aware his professional football career is nearing its end, and leaving the Argentine national team is the first step in that process. "There's not much time left, and chapters are closing, and this is one that hurts a lot. I love, loved, and will always love being on the national team. I've given my all; I have nothing more to offer, and besides, there are some very good young players coming up behind me who deserve to be there," he stressed, adding: "Thank you for all the love over these 20 years. I'm going to miss hearing you from inside the team. Now I'll be just one of you, always cheering and supporting from the sidelines."

Messi achieved his goals with the national team after winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, as well as the 2021 and 2024 editions of the Copa América, and the 2022 Finalísima. "I leave with the peace of mind and pride of having given you, along with my teammates, dreamlike moments. It was incredible to have experienced it with you. I love you all!" he concluded.
