The full reveal of Marathon is just around the corner, and many are eagerly awaiting its release, as this marks the return of a classic Bungie IP, as well as being a completely different game from the Destiny series.
However, since Marathon is a project under the umbrella of Sony (and therefore, PlayStation), many players feared needing a PSN account to play on other platforms, due to certain restrictions on the service in some regions and widespread distrust due to various data leaks and server outages.
Through a publication of Eurogamer, it was announced that Bungie has allayed these concerns via a message on the game's official Discord channel. The developers have explicitly stated: "Marathon will not require a PlayStation account for PC and Xbox players."
However, players will need a Bungie account, as the game is cross-platform and supports cross-save. For Destiny players, this isn't much different, as they may already have a Bungie account. In that case, there's no need to create a new one. Also, unlike PlayStation Network, this is available in all countries.
Many players were concerned about the PSN requirement because, like PlayStation's previous decision with games like Arrowhead Game Studios' Helldivers 2, it required a PSN account even for the Steam-linked PC version, causing a backlash and review bombing on Steam.
Marathon has been under wraps since its initial reveal, but players will finally learn more about the game on April 12. Bungie announced a gameplay showcase for its upcoming PvP extraction shooter.
