Since last April, Sega, the owners of the famous blue hedgehog, have announced their willingness to acquire Rovio, creators of Angry Birds, the successful franchise for mobile devices that even made a big leap into television a few years ago.
Now, this acquisition has finally come to fruition after a total investment by Sega of 706 million euros.
In April, Sega Sammy Holdings announced plans to conduct a 'Tender Offer' to acquire "all of the outstanding shares and options of Rovio," at a total cost of €706 million ($776 million).
Today, the official account of Twitter Sega posted an image of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles teaming up with Angry Birds, confirming that the merger was complete.
The tweet reads: “Welcome to the Rovio family! We are very excited to celebrate Rovio becoming a member of the Sega Group. Get ready for the exciting adventures that await you.”
When announced in April, the acquisition was deemed a “friendly takeover” as Rovio’s board of directors was stated to have “accepted and expressed support for the tender offer.”
What does Sega plan to do after the acquisition of Rovio?
According to its statement at the time, Sega acquired the Angry Birds studio to bolster its own portfolio of live-service mobile games. It wants to use “Rovio’s distinctive know-how in operating live-service mobile games to bring current and new titles to the global mobile gaming market, where there is significant potential.”
At the same time, Sega also claims that Rovio wants to go beyond mobile gaming and wants to help it do so. “Rovio aims to expand its platform outside of mobile gaming, and the company will actively seek to support this process through its capabilities,” the company said in April.
