In 2023, Bungie announced Marathon, the extraction shooter reboot of its classic '90s IP, and many were eagerly awaiting more details about this upcoming installment. Then, it finally happened on April 12th, when its developers revealed new details about the game.
During a stream, we were able to see the revelation of its gameplay and release date, scheduled for September 23, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC with crossplay and crosssave enabled.
The game is described as a "team-based extraction shooter." Players take on the role of a mercenary who has abandoned their human form for a biosynthetic shell with unique abilities and stats. Choose your Runner and explore the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV in search of fortune, power, and answers to Tau Ceti's secrets. Form a team of three to fight against up to 18 other players in each zone.
Bungie has confirmed that the game will not require players on other platforms to create a PlayStation Network account.
At this time, the game's price has not been announced. While they assured us it won't be sold at "full price," it will be a premium game. Bungie is reportedly considering a $40 price tag for Marathon.
Marathon will have early access starting April 23.
Those who wish to be part of the experience before its launch at the end of the year can register for the closed alpha test that begins on April 23rd. Any player interested in the test marathon before its launch in September can register at the Marathon Discord.
"The Closed Alpha Test will be open to those 18 and older located in North America. This will be a fairly small test, as we want to verify our technical capabilities and gather important feedback before moving into larger testing. We know many people won't be able to participate (yet), and we haven't forgotten about you," Bungie said in a statement.
Players in North America will have privileged access, and PlayStation codes are region-locked for North and South America. If you manage to receive a code, you'll receive two codes to invite your friends to the platform.
The closed alpha version of the Marathon will begin on April 23, and all participants will be bound by a strict confidentiality agreement.
Additionally, Bungie confirmed that players will not need a PlayStation Network account to play on Xbox consoles and PCs.
