Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized on Tuesday the Mexican State's historic willingness to facilitate dialogue between Cuba and the United States, although she made any intervention contingent on the express will of both nations.
In a context of prolonged tensions that have recently intensified, the president was emphatic in pointing out that Mexican diplomacy deeply respects the internal decisions of each country.
During her appearance before the media, Sheinbaum responded to questions about possible direct mediation in the bilateral crisis affecting the region. With a conciliatory yet firm tone, the president recalled that Mexico has always been a force for dialogue and understanding, acting as a strategic bridge during critical moments in international history.
"That depends on Cuba and the United States. Cuba is a sovereign, independent country; the United States is too. Mexico has always been willing to negotiate and address any conflict throughout its history, and this is no exception," the president stated.
With these words, the president made it clear that the initiative should not stem from an individual impulse, but from a shared consensus among the parties involved.
Sovereignty and the principles of Mexican foreign policy
The head of the Executive Branch clarified that her stance does not stem from an ambition for personal leadership on the international stage, but rather from a rigorous adherence to the constitutional mandates that govern the country's foreign policy. Sheinbaum emphasized that the self-determination of peoples is a non-negotiable pillar that guides each of her actions and statements regarding external conflicts.
"But it's not a personal matter [...] of someone wanting to be the center of attention," the president pointed out to avoid interpretations about a possible media spotlight.
He explained that Mexico's role is to continue a diplomatic tradition that prioritizes the peaceful resolution of disputes and mutual respect between sister nations, without external impositions.
Sheinbaum explained that the most important thing is to guarantee peace, security and sovereignty and that, in any case, the signal that the mediation that Mexico has offered publicly and privately is possible has to come from Cuba and the United States.
Active solidarity and sending humanitarian aid to the island
Beyond political mediation, President Sheinbaum reaffirmed her administration's commitment to solidarity with the Cuban people in the face of the difficult situation the island is experiencing.
In a gesture of humanitarian support, he confirmed that Mexico is preparing to send essential supplies this week, reinforcing the bonds of brotherhood that have historically united both countries.
This aid will not be arbitrary, but rather will be based on a detailed analysis of the most urgent needs identified in Cuba. The president assured that the management of these resources will be carried out under strict transparency criteria, guaranteeing that Mexican citizens are fully informed about the destination and nature of the supplies sent.
"We need to understand their needs first because it's not just about sending whatever Mexico decides; it will be very transparent and we will inform them properly," he declared.
