Cuba officially inaugurated the 2026-2027 academic year across the country on Tuesday, marking a day of institutional reunion and patriotic reaffirmation in the country's classrooms.
The opening ceremony was held in the historic Prado People's Council, an emblematic area of Havana where the National Apostle, José Martí, was educated. The event was attended by the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and the Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero, who joined the educational community for the official start of the academic year.
During her keynote address, the Minister of Education, Naima Ariatne Trujillo, highlighted the historical and moral significance of this date for Cuban society.
“It’s September again, and as usual, the Cuban school opens its doors. Today, it’s not just the arrival bell or the teacher’s voice that rings; it’s the heartbeat of betting on the future, of strength, resilience, and hope,” the high-ranking official expressed to students and teachers.
The head of the department acknowledged the complex economic conditions that characterize the start of this school year, emphasizing the State's determination to support the education system without giving in to external pressures.
“A new school year begins amidst adversity, but we know that this nation does not give up and that education in Cuba is non-negotiable. Those of us who have worked in education know that there is no nobler task than this,” Trujillo emphasized, while also stressing the need to implement flexible school organization models to ensure the achievement of academic objectives in the face of any daily challenge.
