President Nicolás Maduro published a reflection on social media this Sunday, adding to the national condemnation of the illegal deportation of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador, and criticized the cruelty and injustice with which this event occurred.
On his official accounts, the president wrote: “The actions of the US and El Salvador governments against our young workers constitute an act of cruelty and injustice, a cruel and outrageous kidnapping. From Venezuela, we demand that the US government cease the persecution and violation of the rights of Venezuelan migrants.”
Last weekend, the U.S. government deported nearly 200 Venezuelan migrants accused of belonging to the now-defunct Tren de Aragua criminal organization. They were taken to a high-security prison in El Salvador, where they suffered cruel treatment and harassment at the hands of officials of Nayib Bukele's government.
U.S. federal judge James Boasberg attempted to block the mass deportation of Venezuelans under a 1798 law as illegal, but the Trump administration ignored the order and proceeded to expel the Venezuelans without trial or due process.
Organizations such as the Brennan Center for Justice have criticized the use of the Alien Enemies Act, which has not been used since World War II, because it is designed for times when a country is experiencing a declared war or an armed invasion of its territory by another country.
This Sunday, the Venezuelan government will receive a new flight with migrants from the U.S. as part of the Return to the Homeland Plan, after the parties resumed the process following Washington's boycott by implementing policies derived from the Venezuelan lobby in Miami.
The Venezuelan government has promised to bring back every last migrant who wants to return to the country, as well as to rescue the kidnapped people in El Salvador.
