The president of Suriname, Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, highlighted this Friday the new agreements and cooperation mechanisms signed with Venezuela, to turn the bilateral relationship into concrete benefits for both peoples.
"We reviewed the state of our bilateral relations and considered how we can further strengthen our cooperation and translate our friendship into benefits for both of us," said the Surinamese president after signing agreements in areas such as hydrocarbons, agriculture, fishing, trade, connectivity and energy.
Geerlings-Simons highlighted that Suriname and Venezuela have maintained a friendly and neighborly relationship since the nation's independence in 1975, based on mutual respect, understanding, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He recalled that, during the talks, they addressed various areas of cooperation, with special attention to the agricultural and fishing sectors, considered priorities to strengthen food security, increase productive capacity and improve the economic resilience of Suriname.
The President of Suriname highlighted that, during President Delcy Rodríguez's visit to the nation, two agreements, four memoranda, three cooperation frameworks and a joint declaration were signed, documents that will give substance to bilateral cooperation and establish a basis for its follow-up.
"The joint declaration reflects the most important issues addressed during our bilateral consultations and confirms our shared intention to continue implementing the agreements reached in our economies. Relations must become increasingly commensurate with the close political and diplomatic cooperation that exists between our countries," he stated.
The president also emphasized that the evaluation of the bilateral relationship should not be limited to the number of agreements signed, but to the results that these produce for the populations of both countries.
"The conversations we've had today and the agreements reached are giving new impetus to our corporations. Our commitment is clear: we want a practical, effective, and results-oriented relationship between the government and the public, one that truly contributes to the well-being, development, and prosperity of both our populations," he added.
At the end of her remarks, the President of Suriname reiterated her country's solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the face of the losses caused by the double earthquake recorded last June and expressed Suriname's willingness to provide support during the recovery process.
