This Friday, the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, stressed that all those who want to participate in elections must respect electoral laws, including those that were recently approved, such as the Organic Law Libertador Simón Bolívar against the Blockade and for the Protection of Venezuela, which he insisted must be applied in order to protect the country from situations such as those that have occurred in the past.
In this regard, he recalled that the Organic Law on Electoral Processes expressly states that only those requirements established in the Constitution and in all laws that intend to regulate the functioning of the State, specifically the electoral process, will be met in order to be a candidate.
Speaking after the meeting with the authorities of the National Electoral Council, the parliamentarian recalled that the Organic Law Libertador Simón Bolívar is in force and aims directly at protection elements so that it never again happens that a candidate urges to invade Venezuela, or calls for an invasion.
"There is not a single country in the world that accepts in its laws, that accepts in its regulations, that an elected person or a person who aspires to be a candidate for an elected office is also an agent of a foreign power," Rodríguez said.
The deputy added that both the Electoral Power and the State must establish mechanisms to protect expression through the vote of Venezuelans, in the face of situations such as the brutal attacks that the Venezuelan electoral system received in the election of July 28, and the attack on the right to truthful information, to the truth and to freedom of expression.
Respect for the laws
In his remarks, the Speaker of Parliament reiterated that the meetings held this week were attended by all political parties of democratic opposition factors that participated in the last elections, who discussed the general principles for electoral processes in the country.
"All the political parties that participated in these conversations (…) pointed out that the fundamental principles were respect for the Constitution, respect for electoral laws, respect for the independence of the nation, respect for our sovereignty, and the preservation of peace," said Rodriguez, who also highlighted that these political organizations have promoted voting.
“It must be said that these actors of the democratic opposition have never stopped participating in the electoral events that have been called, and quite the contrary, they have always promoted the inclusion of the vote as an element to resolve the political and social affairs of Venezuela,” he said.
Regarding the review of electoral laws that has been underway since 2024, Jorge Rodríguez recalled that there are only impediments in the modification periods of the Organic Law of Electoral Processes, which - he explained - cannot be modified six months before the call for that election, but all other laws can be reviewed and attended to and remain in the work of the Commission, he pointed out.
Finally, the deputy said that it is likely that they will be able to present some proposals to the CNE regarding other laws.
