Yesterday, finally, in the propitious Museum of Anthropology of Mexico, "the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Unitary Platform of Venezuela" (opposition), signed the "Memorandum of Understanding" to begin the dialogue. Nowhere do we see the many times mentioned: “interim government”, “president in charge”, “powers in exile”; these no longer exist. Nicolás Maduro is the Head of State and Government, without a doubt: he is no longer the “Colombian usurper”, they already tacitly recognize his electoral triumphs. And the opposition sector that had the support of Trump and his allies, after demanding “sanctions” until very recently, now agrees on the need for their lifting.
No matter what is behind the new poses, we celebrate the signing of this document that will allow us to begin conversations on a prioritized agenda that is of great interest, or should be of interest, to our entire country: “Political rights for all; electoral guarantees for all and electoral schedule for observable elections; lifting of sanctions and restoration of rights to assets; respect for the Constitutional Rule of Law; political and social coexistence, renunciation of violence and reparation for victims of violence; protection of the national economy and social protection measures for the Venezuelan people; guarantees of implementation, monitoring and verification of what was agreed.”
We assume that the position of the US government chaired by Joe Biden, contrary to the strident, aggressive and incisive attitude of his predecessor, has influenced the change in position of the so-called G4.
We also assume that they have decided to participate in the “mega-elections” on November 21 with the aspiration of recovering the spaces that they governed in the past: Zulia, Miranda, Carabobo, Nueva Esparta, Metropolitan District of Caracas and several dozen mayors' offices, in a strategic plan that will include some stages; “without hurry but without pause”, as the old people used to say.
A great challenge that the Unitary Platform - heir to the MUD and the Democratic Coordinator - will have will be to convince the visceral anti-Chavismo to go to vote after the incessant and prolonged campaign against the CNE, according to which the PSUV has always won by cheating, although They have never been able to prove it. The last time they participated was in the 2015 parliamentary elections when they obtained the majority of seats.
Let us hope, then, that they reach basic agreements; that the so-called “sanctions” be lifted as soon as possible; that allow us to access national resources impounded abroad; that free the world from the prohibition of having relations with Venezuela and, consequently, improve our conditions. Let us hope, yes, that these words do not only remain in the wishes of a naive person.
Perhaps this is the first of many articles about this dialogue that has just begun. At this time, Miguel Cabrera has not hit the 500th home run; Let's see how many days it takes until the negotiations end and the agreement is fulfilled.
