Global cyberspace is an interconnected virtual domain without physical borders that encompasses digital networks, information systems, and the internet.
It functions as the nervous system of the modern world, centralizing the economy, communications, and critical infrastructure, while also presenting a complex scenario for geopolitical cybersecurity.
Global cyberspace comprises technological infrastructures, computer networks, and electronic systems, where all digital activity takes place. It operates without physical borders, enabling instant communication, commerce, and data exchange worldwide.
To understand its impact today, it is necessary to know its nature and infrastructure, defined as an artificial environment composed of physical layers (fiber optic cables, servers, devices) and logical layers (software protocols) that allow global interaction in real time.
This certainly has a socio-economic impact, as it transforms the daily lives of humanity by facilitating e-commerce, remote work, control of the Internet of Things (IoT), and social interaction through the construction of digital identities.
Of course, this creates a new theater of operations, where states, globalized corporations, and non-state actors compete for influence and strategic dominance. Often, “silent wars and conflicts” are waged through cyberattacks, ransomware, and electronic espionage against critical infrastructure.
Given that the above threatens governance and due to its unregulated nature and the increasing risks that this entails, there is an international debate about its fragmentation and a progressive trend of States to exercise territorial control over its networks.
However, the emergence of cyber technologies is propelling the world toward the Fourth Industrial Revolution; therefore, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics are expected to dominate cyberspace and redefine the role of humans in this realm within just a few years. While these phenomena are currently being tested and implemented in some countries, their impact will be felt globally due to the complex interconnections of cyberspace.
