A new type of cat with chameleon-like ability in its fur is discovered in Finland

The feline is the result of an exceptional genetic mutation that affects the production of pigments in its fur.

News is causing a stir among cat lovers: Finnish scientists, led by Heidi Anderson from the Finnish Department of Medical and Clinical Genetics, have revealed the discovery of a new variant of cat with a unique ability: It can change the color of its her fur!

According to the study recently published in the journal Animal Genetics, they explained that they named it “salmiak” (“salty licorice” in Finnish) in reference to a black candy typical of Finland.

This cat, known as the “salmiak cat,” is the result of an exceptional genetic mutation that affects the production of pigments in its fur. This ability not only allows it to camouflage itself in different environments, but also express its emotional state and health through changes in the tone of its fur.

The research team, in collaboration with the Institute of Animal Biology of Finland, is exploring the implications of this discovery for evolutionary biology and animal genetics.

This finding promises to open new perspectives in the study of the genetic and adaptive behavior of felines.

Characteristics of the Salmiak cat were first found in 2007, when they began to notice that there were cats with a “different” coat.

That is, the hair was originally black, but as it grows it begins to fade until it turns white. Which creates a unique visual effect on salmiak cats.

Additionally, these cats usually have completely white tails and yellow or green eyes.
