It is inescapable that the trace of the unconditional love of a pet can represent more than a company, as many specialists agree that interaction with a pet causes a decrease in stress levels and even helps develop emotional and social skills in children.
Various studies carried out by experts in Behavior Orientation, graduates of the CIPPSV based in Caracas, reveal that the use of animals becomes a viable alternative to minimize daily stress; In addition to allowing a level of tolerance to face the anxiety that the appearance of covid-19 and the radical quarantine generated.
In the opinion of the Master of Science in Behavioral Orientation, Bárbara Rebolledo, a healthy relationship with a pet, considered one more member of the family, can be very satisfactory when it comes to helping to cope with the worst conditions of stress and anxiety.
The specialist Rebolledo defines stress as “a physiological reaction of the organism that is generated by an automatic response to external conditions, perceived by the person as threatening or demanding, activating certain defense mechanisms that on some occasions can alter the physical and emotional balance of a person".
He added that in Venezuela there are foundations and organizations that promote zootherapy or animal-assisted therapy, with the use of various animals to provide help to patients.
On the other hand, the professional of Psychology, graduated from the Central University of Venezuela, Andrés Zambrano Ollarves assured that domestic animals have taken on emotional relevance, becoming one of the family.
Next, Zambrano Ollarves continued that “beyond the relationship that can be established with a pet, the great therapeutic power that animals possess is undeniable. In fact, in the year 492 BC, the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates was already talking about the benefits of interaction with animals, stating that walking the horse benefited people, as they returned from their practices much happier ”.
He clarified that zootherapy is specifically responsible for "achieving a degree of effectiveness in the treatment of various mental and physical pathologies. The pet becomes a positive reinforcer of a certain behavior or simply becomes the motivation of who is receiving therapy. Normally the people who undergo therapy sessions with animals are people with some disability, autism, cognitive impairment or some problem of social exclusion "
When referring to daily stress, the psychologist stated that "contact with animals lowers levels of cortisol in the blood, responsible for stress and also increases levels of endorphins and serotonin that contribute to a feeling of relaxation, pleasure and well-being".
In the opinion of the professional of psychology “people who love animals enjoy benefits that allow them to lead a happier life, maintain a sense of humor and a good state of mind, as they often laugh at the actions of their pets, They learn to be more understanding, constantly perceive positive emotions and spend at least a few minutes a day going out for a walk with their faithful companion, which increases their physical and psychological well-being ”.
By way of reflection, he said that "whoever has not loved an animal does not really know love, or at least that can be said by those who have felt it intensely."
It would be gratifying if that expression of tenderness that exists between pets and their respective owners could infect many people with love so that they feel the need to live a unique adventure by adopting a dog, a cat or any domestic animal, since with this action Not only would they be providing a home for a new furry relative, but they would have a viable alternative to mitigate the stress levels they face on a daily basis.
