Kabosu, the famous internet dog known as Doge, dies

The renowned Akita Inu dog died at the age of 18 after a tough battle against leukemia.

The internet is in mourning! In the early hours of the morning, the death of Kabosu, the famous Akita Inu breed dog, best known for the “Doge” meme and for being the face of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, was announced. He died after a tough battle with leukemia and liver disease at age 18.

Through the official mascot profile, which has more than 520.000 followers, Atsuko Sato (owner of Kabosu) announced the unfortunate news.

“To all who loved Kabosu, on the morning of May 24, Kabosu crossed the rainbow bridge. Thank you all so much for your support over the years,” Atsuko Sato wrote.

“She went very calmly without suffering, as if she fell asleep while she felt the warmth of my hands caressing her. Thank you all so much for loving Kabosu all these years. I'm sure Kabosu was the happiest dog in the world. That makes me the happiest owner in the world. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has sent us so much love,” she continued.

The birth of Doge, a legend on the internet

Sato, a teacher from Japan, adopted Kabosu in 2008 when she was sent to an animal shelter after her puppy adoption center closed. In 2010, her pet became an internet sensation when she published a series of photos showing one in particular: Kabosu with his legs crossed and a slight smile, causing the photo to go viral on social networks like Reddit. and Tumblr.

One Reddit user at the time referred to the image as “Doge” – the intentional misspelling of dog is a nod to a 2005 episode of Homestar Runner (a famous Flash cartoon from two decades ago).

The doge meme became popular in 2013, when people used his photo filled with random texts with the infamous “Comic Sans” font. He later became the face of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency that was originally created as a “joke” coin, and in 2021, the “Doge” meme was sold as a non-fungible token (NFT) for $4 million.
