Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree details its story with a new trailer

Miquella and Messmer star in the trailer for the expansion of From Software's award-winning title

Shadow of the Erdtree, the DLC for Elden Ring, a successful fantasy game developed by From Software that was crowned Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023, has released a new trailer that gives us many more details about its story.

From Software's souls have always presented a rather convoluted story for a new audience, but for lovers of the genre and especially Elden Ring, they will be more than eager for the arrival of the DLC this June 21 PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam thanks to the story trailer:

The trailer focuses heavily on the war that unfolded in the Land of Shadows when the terrible líder known as Messmer unleashes his army of flames upon those who dwell beneath the Erdtree.

“Guided by Empyrean Miquella, players are summoned to the Land of Shadows, a place obscured by the Erdtree where the goddess Marika first set foot,” reads a description on the DLC on the official Elden Ring website.

“In these strange new lands, players discover the dark secrets of the world while meeting others who follow in Miquella's footsteps with ulterior motives.”

This could be the first and last DLC for Elden Ring

In an interview conducted for the Zhihu social network, Hidetaka Miyazaki spoke about the development of new content for Elden Ring and projects related to the souls saga.

The topic would be discussed with the director after he was asked about the next Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree that he plans to release in June of this year.

However, Miyazaki would also comment that due to the success of the game they do not rule out the possibility that this is not the first and last expansion of the game. He highlighted that FromSoftware prefers to release a large expansion for its games rather than sectioning the content into several DLCs.

They have been maintaining this vision that the company has regarding DLC's since the content added in Dark Souls 1, with the exception of certain weapons or functions in later games, the expansions had always been huge areas with new content.

“We don't want to say that this is the end of Elden Ring for now. I think we said something similar at the end of Dark Souls 3. We didn't want to reduce those possibilities or end them right then and there. The same goes for Elden Ring and we don't want to discourage the chances of that happening either. There may be more ideas in the future.” Miyazaki had commented in February during an interview on IGN.

“We have no current plans to make a second DLC or a sequel, but we definitely don't want to kill that possibility. We think there could well be something in the future.” The Director of FromSoftware concluded in that interview.
