The end of an old 'dispute', Atari has bought Intellivision

The most emblematic companies of the 70s and 80s put an end to the first console war with this unexpected union

Atari recently announced which has acquired the brand and ownership of Intellivision games, settling an old dispute from the past and giving both brands a new outlook.

This purchase gives Atari a license to more than 200 titles, they plan to use these licenses to distribute classic games in both physical and digital formats, reinventing both brands and breaking into this niche market.

Intellivision Entertainent LLC., which in the past was the direct competitor of Atari, will soon change its name to be able to develop Amico console games with these licenses.

“This was a very rare opportunity to unite former competitors and reunite fans from the golden age of gaming.” Said Wade Rosen, CEO of Atari.

What historical impact does this Atari purchase have on the industry?

Internet users are referring to this purchase as the end of the first great console war, since in the past the Intellivision and the Atari 2600 were rival consoles in the second generation of consoles in history.

“You can say that Intellivision and Atari fought the first consequential console war in the late '70s and early '80s,” Wade continued.

Without a doubt this purchase has been a surprise for the industry and the video game community, we can only wait and see what projects they have in mind to publish for Amico. Intellivision console that contains a large repertoire of classic games of the time with reinvented graphics for a more current generation.

“Atari has been a valued partner and we have every confidence that they will be a responsible steward of the historic Intellivision brand, with this purchase we plan to bring several titles from both companies to the Amico.” Said Phil Adam, CEO of Intellivision.
