Minecraft will now have its own animated series on Netflix

Mojang's sandbox continues to expand beyond the video game during its 15th anniversary celebration

Minecraft's 15th anniversary continues! During the morning of May 30, the official sandbox account of Mojang announced who are working on an animated series of the game exclusively for Netflix.

At the moment, it is unknown when the series will premiere. However, it is known to feature new characters beyond Steve and Alex, which players have grown accustomed to playing with over the years, and according to Netflix, it will feature an original story that will present the world of Minecraft under a “ new focus".

Neither the cast members of the series nor its official name are known.

The official trailer of just 20 seconds gives a first look at what some characters will look like within the series. We see a Creeper sneaking up to destroy the background and reveal an underground cave system brimming with lava until the trailer confirms that it will indeed be an animated series.

The person in charge of producing the series will be WildBrain, the same studio that has worked on other Netflix projects such as Sonic Prime and Ninjago: Dragons Rising.

The Minecraft movie is also on the way

It has been known for many years that Mojang is working on a live action Minecraft together with Warner Bros. Discovery and with Jason Momoa and Jack Black as the protagonists of the film. However, beyond some photo leaks on the recording set, and some promotional videos, not much is known.

There aren't that many details of the movie's plot either. However, it is known that other actors such as Emma Myers (Merlina, Trapped in the Basement, The Glades), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple, Orange is the New Black, Mahalia, Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad) and Sebastian Eugene Hansen (Lisey's Story, Seeking Justice) have already been confirmed.

Producers on the project include Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Vu Bui and the late Jill Messick.
