EU believes it is “possible” to attack Russia with Western weapons and Moscow responds

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the West must know “what it is playing with.”

The defense ministers of the European Union (EU) will discuss this Tuesday the possibility of lifting restrictions on the use of Western weapons by Ukraine to attack Russian territory.

This was stated by the high representative of the bloc for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, when attending the meeting, which is being held in Brussels and has the participation of the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg.

On the table “is the question of [whether] we allow weapons to be used to attack outside Ukrainian territory, as Jens Stoltenberg proposed the other day,” said the head of European diplomacy. “Do we also allow our weapons to be used on Russian territory? Well, some Member States have begun to decide, eliminating this limitation. Another important thing to discuss today,” he added.

Borrell maintained that kyiv's use of Western weapons, "according to the law of war, is perfectly possible."

“There is no contradiction. I could retaliate or I could fight the one who fights me from [his] territory. I am sure that some will put the risk of escalation on the table. But you have to balance the risk of escalation and the need for Ukrainians to defend themselves,” he argued.

However, not all EU countries agree to approve the use of Western weapons against Russia, arguing that this could trigger a major conflict, even a global one.

Putin warns of “serious consequences”

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned NATO countries on Tuesday that a permanent escalation of the Ukrainian conflict would entail serious consequences.

“A continued escalation could have serious consequences. If these serious consequences reach Europe, how will the US behave taking into account our strategic arms parity? líder Russian. Furthermore, Putin warned that members of the Atlantic Alliance must “be aware of what they are playing with.”

In this way, the Russian president reacted to NATO plans to allow Ukraine to use long-range weapons to hit targets on Russian territory. “Do [Western countries] want a global conflict?” Putin questioned, adding that the members of the military bloc previously wanted to negotiate with Moscow in the field of strategic weapons but now the Russian authorities “see no desire to do so” because part of their Western counterparts.

At the same time, the head of state indicated that, due to Ukrainian attacks on residential neighborhoods in Russian cities, the country had been forced to “create security zones”, which is now happening in the direction of Kharkiv. “We warn you: stay out of our territory, do not bomb Belgorod and other neighboring territories, otherwise we will be forced to create security zones […] Now you are reaping the fruits of your creativity. The same can happen in the case of the use of long-range precision weapons,” he stressed.
