Türkiye shows its interest in getting closer to the BRICS

It is the first NATO member country to approach the strongest economic group in the world.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, Hakan Fidan, has expressed interest in cooperating with the BRICS during his visit to China, reports the Anadolu agency.

Fidan indicated that while Türkiye is in a customs union with the EU, it is also exploring new opportunities for cooperation with various partners on different platforms such as the BRICS.

Furthermore, the Turkish minister declared that he will participate in the meeting of BRICS foreign ministers, which will be held in Russia next week.

Fidan expressed his country's pursuit of new cooperation opportunities with different partners in platforms such as BRICS during an official visit to China, and further stated that he will attend the bloc's foreign ministers' meeting in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod on the 10th. and June 11.

Russia shows satisfaction

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov stated that Moscow welcomes Ankara's interest in cooperating with the BRICS.

“Without a doubt, we all welcome the growing interest of our neighbors in the BRICS, including such important partners as Türkiye. Certainly, the topic of this interest will be on the agenda of the BRICS summit, which will be chaired by Russia and for which we are very actively preparing,” he stressed.

Peskov said the organization is unlikely to fully meet the interests of all countries wishing to join.

“But the BRICS are interested in maintaining contacts with all interested states. To this end, different formats are being considered to maintain contacts. This is a long-term process. But we welcome that great interest,” he added.

Initially made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the bloc increased its number of members on January 1, when Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joined. At their August 2023 summit, the BRICS agreed to focus on de-dollarization and establishing economic ties in their members' national currencies.
