Thailand formalizes intention to join Brics group

Thailand had already expressed its intention to join the bloc and play a more active role in South-South cooperation.

Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa delivered a letter to his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, expressing his country's intention to be a full member of the Brics group.

According to the press release from the Thai Foreign Ministry, the meeting between both diplomats took place last Monday in Nizhny Novgorod, the Russian city where the meeting of foreign ministers of the Brics members took place.

The two authorities agreed to promote cooperation “in economic and cultural exchange and ties between peoples.”

“Thailand could improve the inclusion and interconnection of the Brics and make the Brics have more impact in promoting the interests of developing countries,” the Foreign Ministry noted, recalling the minister's intervention at the Brics meeting.

Previously, Thailand had expressed its intention to join the bloc and play a more active role in South-South cooperation.

At the end of last May, Thai Government spokesman Chai Wacharonke indicated that the cabinet had approved a draft official letter to outline the Asian country's intention to join the bloc.
