They protest in Brazil against a law that equates abortion with homicide

The legislative proposal was presented by a deputy from the party of former president Jair Bolsonaro

In several cities in Brazil, massive protests were recorded to reject the bill that seeks to equate abortion, after 22 weeks of gestation, with homicide.

The call for this day of protest was made by the National Front Against the Criminalization of Women and for the Legalization of Abortion.

Protesters mobilized on Thursday to express their discontent with banners and slogans such as “No to the rape bill,” “A girl is not a mother and a rapist is not a father,” or “For the fight of all women.”

The legislative proposal was presented by the deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante of the Liberal Party - of former president Jair Bolsonaro - and took on an urgent nature in the Chamber of Deputies, in a quick vote on Wednesday, having the endorsement for it to go directly to the Plenary without prior discussion in The commissions.

This bill attempts to reform the Penal Code to establish penalties ranging from six to 20 years in prison, including in cases of pregnancy due to rape.

The representative of the World March of Women, Carliene Sena, considered the proposal to be a “true aberration.”

“This proposal is a true aberration because it goes backwards in relation to what was already defined in 1940, so it is not justified in any way, much less as an emergency. We understand that the country has other real emergencies,” Sena declared.

Current Brazilian legislation establishes that the termination of pregnancy is carried out if it is the result of rape, due to risk to the woman's life or fetal anencephaly, without time restrictions for carrying it out.
