Dominican president highlights “peace” and “tranquility” in elections

Today Dominicans elect president, vice president, members of Congress and the Central American Parliament.

The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, who is running for re-election this Sunday, stressed the “peace” and “tranquility” in the elections, where so far, he stated, there have been no notable incidents.

After voting in the capital and highlighting “the maturity” of the Dominican people, Abinader, candidate for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM, progressive and liberal), called on his compatriots to go to the polls “in favor of the candidate they want.”

The head of state, 56 years old and one of the nine candidates for the Presidency, hoped that the day would pass “in peace” because “in the end all Dominicans are going to unite” after the process.

“Dominican democracy will emerge stronger,” concluded the president, who is the favorite, according to independent polls.

The voting centers opened at 07:00 am and are scheduled to close at 17:00 local time.

When opening the process, the president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Román Jáquez, invited Dominicans to “exercise the sacred right to choose.”

On this day, to which 8,1 million voters are called, the country's president, the vice president and the members of the bicameral Congress (32 senators and 190 deputies) will be elected, as well as 20 Dominican representatives in the Central American Parliament (Parlacen ).
