Iran's presidency will be defined in the second round

Masoud Pezeshkian and Saeed Jalili will compete to lead the destinies of the Islamic nation

The new president of the Islamic Republic of Iran will be chosen in a second round of elections to be held on July 5, after none of the candidates achieved the minimum threshold of 50% of the votes in the presidential elections this Friday.

Earlier, the spokesman for the country's electoral commission, Mohsen Eslami, revealed the results of the first round in which Pezeshkian led with 10 votes, followed by Jalili with 415.

Low involvement

More than 60 million Iranians were called to go to the electoral polls this June 28; However, only 24,54 million voted in an election marked by national mourning after the unfortunate death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter accident on May 19, which led to the elections being brought forward.

Of the 14 presidential elections held since the triumph of the Islamic revolution in 1979, only one was decided in the second round in 2005, when the conservative Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won.
