Petro defends Pedro Sánchez from Milei's “barbaric” attack

The Colombian president expressed his solidarity with the head of the Spanish government in the face of the new provocation by the far-right.

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, expressed his solidarity this Sunday with the head of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, for what he considered “barbaric” attacks made against him by the Argentine president, Javier Milei, which have caused a diplomatic conflict between Both countries.

“Progressivism advances in Spain. "My solidarity with the Spanish president in the face of the increasingly barbaric attacks by those who have not realized that they have led the world to disease, hunger, war and the possible extinction of life with the climate crisis," said the head of state. This Sunday, the Government of Spain called its ambassador in Buenos Aires for consultations 'sine die' (without a deadline, without a date) after Milei's statements in Madrid about Sánchez, whom he described as a "scumbag", and about his wife, Begoña Gómez , which he described as “corrupt.”

Milei made these controversial statements during his speech at the international far-right convention organized in Madrid by the national far-right party, Vox.

Petro has also had scuffles with Milei, which even led Colombia to call its ambassador in Buenos Aires, Camilo Romero, for consultations on January 26, after the Argentine president assured, in an interview with journalist Patricia Janiot, that the Colombian president “is a murderous communist who is sinking” the country.

However, diplomatic relations returned to normal on April 19 with a meeting in Bogotá between Colombia's Foreign Minister, Luis Gilberto Murillo, and his Argentine counterpart, Diana Mondino.

On that occasion, the diplomatic crisis caused by Milei's repeated insults to Petro was resolved and it was agreed to begin a “new moment” in the bilateral relationship.
