European People's Party wins the elections to the European Parliament

More than 370 million Europeans were called to vote to elect the 720 deputies of Parliament

The first results confirm the victory of the European People's Party (EPP), to which the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, belongs. According to provisional data, the group would obtain 189 seats, followed by the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (135 seats), the Renew Group (83 seats) and the European Conservatives and Reformists (72 seats). Meanwhile, Identity and Democracy would obtain 58 seats, the Greens 53 and the Left 35.

Coming out on stage to thank voters, Von der Leyen said: “Today is a good day for the European People's Party. We won the European elections, we are by far the strongest party. “We are the anchor of stability,” RT noted.

Von der Leyen reached out to social democrats and liberals - with whom she has 407 seats in a 720-seat European Parliament - to try to reach an agreement to build a new pro-European majority for the next five years of the community legislature.

Both the social democrats and the liberals showed themselves willing to seek that majority, whose first task will be to confirm the candidate for president of the European Commission that the heads of State and Government will nominate in the coming weeks, a position for which Von der herself is a favorite. Leyen, reported EFE.

The president previously said that by winning the election, she intends to build a “bastion against extremists on both the left and the right.”

Some data

  • The vote, to which 370 million voters from the 27 member states of the European Union were called, will result in 720 MEPs—15 more than in the 2019 elections—for the next five years.
  • The number of legislators elected by each EU country is based on the principle of degressive proportionality, according to which each MEP from a large country represents more people than one from a small nation.
