More than 600 prisoners murdered in Ecuador in the last 6 years

At least 680 inmates lost their lives in prisons in Ecuador between 2018 and 2023, according to a report by several organizations that was sent to the Committee Against Torture (CAT) of the United Nations.

The document was presented by the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDH), the Committee of Relatives for Justice in Prisons and the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT) before that instance of the United Nations, which will review this week. to Ecuador.

According to the report, of the six years indicated, 2021 was the bloodiest, with 348 inmates murdered in State custody.

Specifically, the organizations record these murders in prisons:

2018: 15

2019: 30

2020: 51

2021: 348

2022: 147

2023: 89

“The deaths in prison massacres have been characterized by their excessive violence that is detailed among: mutilations, incinerations, castrations and other inhuman, cruel and degrading acts that show the living conditions of people deprived of liberty,” the document says.

Likewise, the organizations point out in the text that these prison riots were previously warned by the people deprived of liberty.

“This prior knowledge of the prison massacres is evident (in) that the prisoners sent audios of consolation or help to family members, human rights organizations or on social networks. That is why before the massacres occurred, families always gathered outside the penitentiary centers to demand action from the State to prevent possible deaths,” they indicate.
