Luis Abinader leads elections in the Dominican Republic with 59,24%

With 20% of the votes counted, the Central Electoral Board issued the first bulletin with irreversible data.

The presidential candidate of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM, progressive and liberal) and current head of state of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, leads the results of the elections held this Sunday in the country with 59,24% of the votes, according to the first official data with more than 20% of the votes counted.

8.1 million Dominicans are participating in the elections in the Dominican Republic, in a process in which the next president and 32 senators, 190 deputies and 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament (Parlacen) will be elected.

In total 9 candidates will compete for the Dominican presidency, among them President Luis Abinader, who is seeking re-election and represents the “Modern Revolutionary Party”; former president Leonel Fernández, who leads his own party “La Fuerza del Pueblo” (LFP); and Abel Martínez, who is running for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) began to announce the first results with 20% of the votes counted at 8:30 pm local.

  • Luis Abinader: 876,256 with 59.26% of the votes.
  • Leonel Fernández: 397,824 with 26.90% of the votes
  • Abel Martínez: 157,155 with 10.63% of the votes.

Although significant data on the legislative elections are not yet known, the most credible polls also projected the victory of the ruling Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRM), which could even obtain the majority of seats in the National Congress (bicameral).

This Sunday's election day passed normally in practically the entire country, although the opposition denounced irregularities, such as the alleged purchase of ID cards, the essential document to vote.

Leaders of the opposition Dominican Liberation Party and Fuerza del Pueblo spoke of alleged purchases of ID cards and the existence of electoral ballots that were already marked in favor of a candidate when the voter approached the polls.
