Lavrov: expansion of the Brics confirms the creation of a new world order

The foreign ministers discuss current regional issues and interaction between the BRICS countries within the framework of the association and on other platforms

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Sergei Lavrov, stated this Monday that the expansion of the BRICS is a clear confirmation of the process of concretizing a multipolar world order, reported Prensa Latina.

“The formation of new centers for making political decisions of global importance is taking place between the states of the Global South and the Global East, between the states of the World Majority,” said the chancellor at the inauguration of the Brics Ministerial Council. Plus that will last until July 11.

The head of diplomacy of the Eurasian giant assured that the 10 nations that make up the group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran), as well as those who are betting on its incorporation, advocate for a more just way of life based on the sovereign equality of countries and the diversity of civilizations. The transition to a new world order will take an entire historical era and will be thorny, he stressed, while criticizing how the United States and its allies do not abandon attempts to maintain their elusive dominance and stop the objective processes of the formation of multipolarity.

In that sense, Lavrov denounced that the collective West uses economic instruments as weapons: through sanctions, pressure and financial blackmail they try to influence the choice of development models and trading partners by sovereign States.

“The West does not shy away from the use of force. We all know the examples: Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine and several other countries. And this is just the tip of the iceberg,” he remarked.

The Foreign Minister specified that recent international events have “removed the masks” of those who until now had verbally claimed the almost exclusive right to define “universal values” under the guise of a “rules-based order.”

In this regard, he argued that Russia, like the countries of the world majority, defends a more equitable world order, based on the sovereign equality of States and taking into account the balance of forces and interests.

Brics is one of those associations where the principles of equal cooperation are implemented with actions, not words: mutual respect, openness, pragmatism, solidarity, continuity and, of course, consensus, said the chancellor.

The ministerial meeting, which will be held in the city of Nizhny Novgorod this June 10 and 11, in the opinion of the hosts, will be the appropriate platform for the exchange of opinions on current issues on the world agenda, even in the context of joint efforts to strengthen true multilateralism in international relations.
