Israel launches new ground offensive in Gaza and attacks UN office

38.150 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, most of them women and children, and more than 87.700 have been injured

Israel announced this Monday morning, July 8, that it launched a “ground operation” in Gaza City, against targets such as the headquarters of the UN Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA), alleging that it housed weapons and rooms. investigation and arrest.

The Israeli Army said in a statement that the operation is based on intelligence indicating the presence of "Hamas and Islamic Jihad infrastructure and operatives in Gaza City."

When referring to the attack on the UNRWA headquarters, the Army alleged that the building housed weapons and investigation and detention rooms for both groups, the Anadolu agency reported.

The military said it had previously carried out “operations” in the area “to eliminate Hamas operatives and destroy an underground tunnel route beneath the complex.”

During the recent offensive, the Israeli Army reportedly used loudspeakers to warn civilians to leave the building and promise safe passage for non-combatants.

According to the Israeli statement, when the ground offensive began, civilians were warned about military actions in the area, stating that a route would be opened to allow the evacuation of uninvolved civilians.

By ignoring a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has faced international condemnation amid its continuing brutal offensive against Gaza since an October 7 attack by the resistance group Palestinian Hamas.

Since then, nearly 38.150 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, most of them women and children, and more than 87.700 have been injured, according to local health authorities.
