Clash between cartels leaves 19 dead in Chiapas, Mexico

First investigations point to a confrontation between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Chiapas and Guatemala Cartel, which are fighting for control of the border area.

The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) of Mexico confirmed that 19 people were found dead over the weekend in the municipality of La Concordia, state of Chiapas (south), in a confrontation between drug trafficking cartels.

“The first investigations reveal a confrontation between the criminal groups of the Sinaloa Cartel and the aforementioned Chiapas and Guatemala Cartel, who are fighting for criminal control in that border area,” they reported on Monday. local media.

The authorities were alerted last Saturday about the presence of people dead in a town in the La Concordia municipality and, when they arrived at the scene, they found a Nissan truck and a cargo truck in the middle of the road.

In the bed of the truck, at least 14 bodies with gunshot wounds were found, all men, then "two more in the cabin, two on the side and one more approximately 100 meters away," detailed the entity, which had previously indicated which were 20.

For its part, the Chiapas Prosecutor's Office specified that "all the bodies located inside the dump truck were wearing dark clothing, tactical vests, and they also found firearm magazines on each of them," he reported. Telesur.

Following this event, the federal government sent about 200 members of the Armed Forces and the National Guard to the entity to contribute to security efforts.
