The US fears that Israel will launch a new war in Lebanese territory

The main concern concerns the recent intensification of Israeli attacks against Lebanese territory

Increased exchanges of attacks between Israel and Hezbollah this week have sparked fears in Washington that Tel Aviv could launch a war against the movement on Lebanese territory, CBS News reports citing US officials.

After analyzing the latest events, several scenarios are considered. The main concern concerns the recent intensification of Israeli attacks against Lebanese territory, which has been interpreted as “preparing the battlefield for a large-scale attack.” “These officials are increasingly concerned that Israel will start a war against Hezbollah in Lebanon that it will not be able to end without American support,” the outlet writes.

Other officials expressed the view that Hezbollah's rocket attacks against the Hebrew country could spark an unforeseen war if they trigger an event to which Tel Aviv feels compelled to respond.

In this context, an official reported that Amos Hochstein, one of President Joe Biden's main diplomatic advisors, will arrive in Israel next Monday to work on de-escalation.

It is also noted that the risks of escalation will increase if the agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza presented by Biden at the end of May fails. According to a senior US official, if achieved, it could influence the situation on the Lebanese-Israeli border, “so it is an opportunity for us to end this conflict.”
