Plane carrying Malawi vice president disappears

Local authorities fear that the aircraft may have suffered an accident during a forced landing.

A military plane that this Monday was carrying the vice president of Malawi, Saulos Chilima, and nine other people, disappeared from radar, according to a statement from the Presidential Office, cited by BBC Africa.

The aircraft left the Malawian capital of Lilongwe on Monday morning and was due to land shortly after at the Mzuzu international airport, in the north of the country. However, it did not make landfall as planned and all efforts to establish contact failed.

As a result of the events, the president of the nation, Lazarus Chakwera, canceled a flight he had planned to the Bahamas and ordered a search operation.

According to local media, Chilima was traveling in a Defense Forces helicopter that apparently had its itinerary interrupted due to inclement weather. It is feared that the aircraft may have had an accident during a forced landing.

Sources claim to have witnessed a plane crash in a forest area in Chikangawa town, which is believed to be associated with Chilima. However, the Government has not confirmed any information in this regard.
