Colombia stops sales of coal to Israel until it stops genocide in Gaza

Colombian President Gustavo Petro signed the decree this Friday and it will come into effect in five days.

The Colombian Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism published a decree this Friday according to which the country will stop selling coal to Israel in an attempt to pressure Tel Aviv to stop the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip (Palestine).

“This decree will enter into force after five calendar days […] and will be valid until the orders of provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice in the process of applying the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment are fully complied with. of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip,” the document reads.

In this sense, the document described the execution of the decision measures as "urgent", to "prevent and stop acts of genocide against the Palestinian people and with the purpose of protecting public morality and the essential interests" of the Latin American country. Likewise, the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, stated through his X account that the restriction will apply “until the genocide stops.”

Colombia is the largest supplier of coal to Israel, to which it sold $450 million of this fossil fuel last year.

In May, the Colombian Government announced the breaking of diplomatic relations with Israel, in rejection of Tel Aviv's attacks against the Palestinian population, and urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant against Netanyahu.
