Colombia opens Embassy in Ramallah in recognition of Palestine

Petro will continue to promote the recognition of Palestine as a State with full rights in the United Nations.

The Government of Colombia will install an embassy in the city of Ramallah, located in the West Bank, as part of its actions to recognize the legitimacy of the State of Palestine, a process that began in 2018 during the administration of former president Juan Manuel Santos.

“President (Gustavo) Petro has given the instruction that we install the Colombian embassy in Ramallah, the representation of Colombia in Ramallah, that is the next step we are going to take,” reported the Colombian Foreign Minister, Luis Gilberto Murillo, this Wednesday. to the local press.

The diplomat added that Petro also recently “led” a meeting of Latin American presidents in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, where the delegations agreed to take “action to ensure that Palestine is recognized as a State with full rights in the United Nations.”

Murillo recalled that together with Brazil, Colombia managed to bring to the UN Security Council and then to the General Assembly of the organization, the issue of recognition of Palestine as a State with full rights. “We are sure that more and more countries will recognize Palestine,” he said.

The Colombian foreign minister added that these actions have “nothing against Israel or the people of Israel or the Jews,” but rather obey the agreements reached through the UN so that the conflict between both nations is resolved through the creation and recognition of two sovereign States.

At the beginning of May, Petro decided to break relations with Israel by arguing that Colombia could not be next to a genocide, this in reference to the armed attacks and bombings carried out by the Israeli government against the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip.
