Death toll in Gaza could be five times higher

Researchers from the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada estimate that the number of Israeli murders exceeds 186 victims.

A team of three researchers from the UK, US and Canada estimated that the real death toll from Israel's war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip could exceed 186.000. This figure is five times higher than that reported last month by the health authorities of the Palestinian enclave, which the UN accepts as reliable.

In a recent study published last Friday in The Lancet, researchers point out that “armed conflicts have indirect consequences for health, beyond the direct damage caused by violence.” They also specified that “indirect deaths” include people who die from hunger, thirst or exposure to communicable and non-communicable diseases and that, “in recent conflicts, the number of indirect deaths is between 3 and 15 times greater than the number of deaths.” direct.”

On June 19, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that 37.396 people had died in Gaza as of that date. Although these are data reported by the Gaza Ministry of Health, the authors of the article consider it likely that this is an “underestimation” of the real number of deaths, because it does not take indirect deaths into account.

Applying a “conservative estimate of four indirect deaths for every direct death,” the authors point out that it is not implausible to estimate that some 186.000 deaths, or even more, could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza.

Taking into account their estimates, the team stressed that an immediate and urgent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is essential, accompanied by measures that allow the distribution of medical supplies, food, drinking water and other resources for basic human needs. .
