The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported that the number of forcibly displaced people increased to 120 million, as a result of various new and existing conflicts.

According to its recent report on Global Forced Displacement Trends, among the conflicts that have been decisive in the increase in the number are those in Sudan, Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as the violence experienced in the Gaza Strip. Gaza against the Palestinian people.

“The most recent increase, which brings the total number of forcibly displaced people to 120 million, according to data from May 2024, is due both to the consequences of new and existing conflicts and the inability to resolve protracted crises,” he said. .

UNHCR indicated that for 12 consecutive years there have been increases in the numbers of forced displacement in the world. Furthermore, he specified that the climate crisis continues to affect displaced people. 

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, warned that without greater cooperation to address the causes of this situation, “displacement numbers will continue to increase, bringing with them more suffering and costly humanitarian responses.”

“Behind these stark figures, which continue to rise, countless human tragedies are hidden. The suffering must prompt the international community to act urgently to address the causes of forced displacement,” he emphasized.

For its part, the Internal Displacement Observatory (IDMC), cited by UNHCR, reports that the most notable increase in the data occurred among people fleeing conflicts and remaining within their country, totaling 68,3 million, an increase of almost 50 percent in five years.

Regarding refugees and those requiring international protection, there are now 43,4 million, taking into account those who are under the mandates of both UNHCR and the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA). ).

The report also details that, in 2023, more than 5 million internally displaced people and one million refugees were able to return to their homes.
