Vaccines against covid-19 in the eye of the hurricane

None of those that have been the subject of accusations were administered in Venezuela

Most vaccines against Covid-19 work well and protect, so there are few biological ones made for this purpose that leave consequences.

They were made with a variety of technologies that have been used for years, but more modern ones began to be used in recent history.

The Russian Sputnik V was the first to be registered and one of the most used, and there is no evidence that it causes serious consequences, like the Chinese Sinopharm.

Others do not suffer the same luck and have already stopped marketing due to low demand or because they have been in the eye of the hurricane due to the secondary reactions they cause.

One case is Astrazeneca, created with modified adenovirus, and in recent days the pharmaceutical company recognized before a United Kingdom court that it can trigger thrombosis syndrome with thrombocytopenia (TTS), although they occur with a very low frequency, five per million doses applied, and in relation to the disease it is not significant.

In Europe it caused several cases of thrombosis. In Spain, Germany, France and Italy it was suspended; However, due to the low frequency of cases and benefits, they resumed it.

A known case was that of the British Jamie Scott, who suffered irreversible brain injuries due to blood clot formation and hemorrhage after receiving Astrazeneca in April 2021.

In this regard, epidemiologist Alejandro Rísquez declared to Últimas Noticias that this vaccine, which had great commercial impact, is one of those most related to side effects.

He said that although they are very rare, they are quite serious such as pericarditis and diseases of the heart, as well as lungs, in addition to thrombosis.

“This vaccine was discontinued two years ago. However, it returned to the media spotlight, since the company decided to remove it from the list of vaccines that were being used against covid,” the doctor said.

Data from Vaccine Safaty Datalink reflect that there are also risks of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine 21 days after its administration, even 20 times more likely than vaccines with messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, developed by Pfizer and Moderna.

A study that was released last March by the magazine Vaccine with data from more than 99 million people, shows that known and rare side effects were detected largely in the biologics from Pfizer and Moderna, but also from Astrazeneca.

They confirm that Moderna and Pfizer are linked to myocarditis and pericarditis, which cause inflammation of the muscles and lining of the heart, and in the case of Moderna, there is a greater risk with the second dose.

Additionally, there are records of neurological and clotting effects associated with Astrazeneca and Johnson & Johnson in the United States. First doses of Moderna and Astrazeneca are also linked to acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

Technologies

Dr. Rísquez explained that there are several types of technologies for the development of vaccines, one of them is those with inactivated viruses like the Chinese ones and they are one of those used in Venezuela.

They protect against one of the virus capsules, which is the most common and produces a quantity of cellular and humoral immune response to inhibit and restrict SARS-CoV-2 infection, and if it occurs, the viral picture is much milder.

In the case of mRNA, they are to give instructions to cells, produce protection and cellular response. It is one of the most modern and most used, but it did not reach Venezuela and is precisely the one used by Pfizer and Moderna.

On the other hand, viral vector vaccines, a technology that was administered in the country with Sputnik V. “The truth is that it was applied very well at the beginning of the pandemic, it was really very positive,” commented the epidemiologist.

He stressed that the reactions also have to do with the patients' medical conditions, but the greatest concern is that the rare and few cases of adverse effects have occurred in age groups that are not at risk.

The fact that side effects such as fever, headache and more occur, is normal and, generally, are signs that appear for a few days.

Now, those prolonged and serious side effects are those attributed as sequelae because they cause conditions for a long or permanent period in the body.

Venezuela was right

Three years ago, when the Astrazeneca vaccine began to be marketed, and shortly afterwards it generated controversy, the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, announced the ban on the entry of this vaccine into the country.

The National Government notified the Pan American Health Organization in March 2021 that it refused to receive this vaccine through the Covax mechanism of the World Health Organization.

The decision of the Venezuelan Executive was based on technical reports on the side effects with the dose of this vaccine and that it had registered several deaths in European countries.

Among the vaccines administered in Venezuela, the Cuban Abdala, the Chinese Sinopharm and the Russian Sputnik V stand out, which until recently were administered in the public health system, as well as in other pharmaceutical facilities.
