They estimate that between 4 to 7 hurricanes could reach categories 3 to 5, with winds of 111 miles per hour or more this season

This year's hurricane season could bring up to 25 named storms and 13 hurricanes, of which up to 7 could become major.

The information was offered by the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (inameh) on his social networks, in which he noted that according to the latest report from the United States National Hurricane Center, 17 to 25 named storms are forecast for this year (with winds of 39 mph or more). Of these, between 8 and 13 could become hurricanes – with winds of 74 mph or more – and between 4 and 7 could become hurricanes with categories of 3 to 5 (with winds of 111 mph or more).

Likewise, through its social networks, the institution announced the names that would be assigned to these storms. Specifically, these are: Alberto; Beryl; Chris; Debbie; Ernesto; Francine; Gordon; Helene; Isaac; Joyce; Kirk; Leslie; Milton; Nadine; Oscar; Patty; Radael; Sarah; Tony; Valerie and William.

85% chance of above-normal hurricane activity

On the other hand, forecasters from the NOAA National Weather Service (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) estimate an 85% probability that hurricane activity will be above normal in the basin this year. Atlántico this year, indicates on its portal.

According to the entity, this is due to a confluence of factors, including near-record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean; the development of La Niña conditions in the Pacific; the reduction of the Atlantic trade winds and less wind action. These conditions tend to favor the formation of tropical storms.

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, NOAA says.
