They collect half a ton of waste during a day for Sea Turtle Day

Authorities and environmentalists carried out operations on the jetties of the La Guaira Vertical Gym, in El Cardonal

More than 500 kilos of solid waste were collected in a day held this Monday, on the jetties adjacent to the La Guaira Vertical Gym, in the El Cardonal sector, to commemorate World Sea Turtle Day, which was celebrated on Sunday.

The cleanup was promoted by the Ecosustainability Secretariat of the Government of La Guaira, the Ministry of Ecosocialism, the Ecological Movement of Venezuela (Meven) and the National Parks Institute of Venezuela (Inparques).

The Secretary of Ecosustainability, Andrea Chacón, reported that they collected solid waste in this area of the Vertical Gym, so they called on the conscience of the locals to avoid this situation.

Edgar Rojas, member of the Inparques civil park ranger body, asked citizens to become aware of how to protect the environment. “We invite you to join in and make a grain of sand into a great mountain. Protecting nature is defending the Homeland,” he noted.

The volunteers who participated in the cleanup piled plastic waste, textile clothing, plates, lids and various contaminating objects in black bags.

World Sea Turtle Day is celebrated every June 16 to raise awareness about their conservation and care. In Venezuela there are five of the seven world species of sea turtles: cardón (Dermochelys coriacea), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), the loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and the guaragua (Lepidochelys olivacea).
