Datos ÚN: 7 out of 10 think that motorized vehicles do not comply with the rules

Almost half (48,9%) of motorcyclists themselves admit that there are failures to comply with traffic rules.

During the last years the use of motorcycles has grown In Venezuela. In 2022, 150.000 motorcycles were produced in the country and in 2023 more than 200.000, according to the Association of Industrialists, Manufacturers and Assemblers of Motorcycles in Venezuela (Aifem). The reason may have to do with the restrictive access to the purchase of cars with the absence of credits for their acquisition, although in recent weeks The panorama in this area seems to be changing. The truth is that possibly the increase in the number of motorcycles in circulation has highlighted the discussion about compliance or non-compliance with traffic regulations by motorized vehicles.

In May, the Municipal Council of Caracas passed an ordinance that regulates the use and circulation of mototaxis and motorcycles in general, addressing the concerns of citizens. Also, motivated by the frequent occurrence of traffic accidents involving motorcyclists, proposals have resurfaced to restrict the circulation of motorcycles on expressways and in general at certain hours, particularly at night.

In this context, in Datos ÚN We decided to poll the opinion of people, both those who ride motorcycles and those who do not, about how compliance with regulations by motorcycle drivers is perceived and also about the aforementioned proposals. We published a digital survey on our web portal and social networks and between Monday, May 27 and Thursday, May 30, 835 people participated. What follows are the results.

There is awareness of the faults

In all items we differentiate the opinions of those who ride motorcycles and those who do not, and of course we indicate the general total. First of all, we asked the participants in our survey if they consider that, in general, motorized vehicles comply with traffic regulations. We found that 57,7% totally disagree with that statement. Furthermore, 13,9% said they more or less disagree. If we add these two opinions we have that 71,6%, that is, seven out of 10, consider that motorcycle drivers generally do not comply with the rules.

When differentiating the responses, we have that among those who do not ride a motorcycle, 67,1% totally disagree and 12,2% more or less disagree, which adds up to 79,3%. On the other side, the motorized side, the disagreement is less, but it is striking that the opinion that the rules are not being followed also prevails. 29,9% of those who do drive motorcycles say they totally disagree with the statement that they comply with the rules and 19% said they more or less disagree. This adds up to 48,9% of motorists who question their own compliance with regulations.

Then we ask what standards the audience considers that motorized vehicles comply with. For this we place as options a list of standards published on the website of the National Institute of Land Transportation and we obtained that the most voted was “Refrain from holding on to another vehicle” with 39,8%. The second was “wearing vests with reflective material” with 31,9%.

We were able to observe, by differentiating the responses, that the proportions in this case are similar between motorized and non-motorized.

Now let's look at the opinion on which standards are least complied with. 69,7% of the total participants believe that motorists do not comply with traffic signs and speed limits. 67,2% consider that they do not respect traffic lights and 66,5% that they do not comply with the precaution of not traveling with small children or more than two people on board.

By differentiating between motorcycle drivers and non-motorcycle drivers, we can see that there are differences. While motorists note that the rule they least comply with is respecting traffic lights (59,2%), people who do not drive motorcycles are more inclined to point out that they do not respect traffic signs and speed limits (73,9%). ).

Measures must be taken

Next, we went on to ask our audience their opinion on the proposal to prohibit the circulation of motorcycles on expressways, such as highways, for example. We have a majority of 56% totally agree and another 12% say they agree more or less. Adding the two items, we observe that 68% would consider approving this measure.

When dividing the responses, it is notable to observe that, among motorized users, 39,8% say they totally agree with prohibiting the use of motorcycles on expressways. Another 10,4% of motorcyclists said they more or less agree. By adding both figures we have that half, 50,2%, of motorcycle drivers would agree with prohibiting the circulation of motorcycles on expressways. Among those who do not drive a motorcycle, the percentages rise to 6,5% for completely agree and 12,5% for more or less agree.

Regarding the restriction of the circulation of motorcycles at certain hours, of the total number of participants in our digital survey, 63,4% say they completely agree with the idea and another 13,4% say they agree more or less. This adds up to 76,8%.

When we divide the responses, it is striking that the motorists themselves, for the most part, would agree with the measure of restricting the circulation of motorcycles at certain times. 46,4% of motorcyclists said they totally agreed and 15,2% said they agreed more or less. Adding the two items, we have that 61,6% of motorized users would consider approving this measure.

Meanwhile, among those who do not ride motorcycles, 69,1% said they totally agree and 12,8% said they more or less agree, for a sum of 81,9%.

These results show in data what is possible to perceive in everyday opinion. Although it must be noted that this survey does not constitute a scientific study of the population's opinion on this matter nor is it intended to reflect an absolute truth, we consider that it provides a measurement of the opinion of the audience of Últimas Noticias and as such it can serve as input to promote a broader consultation.
