Keider Montero receives praise in Detroit

Manager AJ Hinch highlighted his ability to learn quickly

Keider Montero, who is one of the Venezuelans who is making his major league debut this season, has known how to sneak his name into the Detroit Tigers' rotation.

And, after a very complicated first two starts, he has experienced a notable improvement to the point that he has put together quality starts in his last two presentations; including this Monday, where he threw a blank for the first time in his career.

“What Keider can do”, AJ Hinch explained to “It's executing a plan, a goal, and taking it from a bullpen session to a game.”

It should be noted that after being lowered to Triple-A a couple of weeks ago, the native of Santa Teresa del Tuy worked with his pitching coach from the Toledo Mud Hens so that he could improve against left-handed hitters, who this year have batted .337 with an OPS of 1.049 in that branch.

However, his first victory last Wednesday was a step in the right direction, while Monday was the confirmation of that maxim, with the Venezuelan dominating a Cleveland lineup with eight left-handed shovelers in the lineup.

Has the ability to execute

“Keider is a quick learner, a very good guy to coach,” Hinch noted. “[Pitching coach Chris Fetter] does a great job giving him a game plan. He goes out and executes it. All of this, because he is a good learner and because he is willing to learn, evolve and develop, our confidence grows with each outing. The best thing for him is to continue with that mentality while he gains experience here, and tonight he showed that he can do it.”

That said, in 12 and two-thirds innings of work in those last two outings, Keider Montero has struck out eight opponents, has only allowed two runs, given up two walks and his ERA is 1.42 with a WHIP of 0.89.

“I am grateful because they gave me the opportunity to be here,” said the Mirandino. "We're on the same page. They want to win. I want to win"
