Data: More than 86% have asked José Gregorio Hernández for miracles

“I am going to canonize the doctor (…) I don't know when, but I already signed”; were the words that Pope Francis pronounced on Monday, June 24, 2024 regarding the canonization of the town's doctor José Gregorio Hernández, thereby confirming what President Nicolás Maduro said days before regarding this issue expected by many believers of the Catholic faith in Venezuela.

“José Gregorio is now a saint and thanks to Pope Francis for signing the canonization. Give me your blessings and my prayers are in favor of you, for your health and your life,” said the head of state at a mass event in the state of La Guaira.

The president had also commented that 100 years ago the man born in Isnotú, Trujilllo state, had received his title from the people.
However, he questioned how “some leaders have conspired” so that José Gregorio Hernández does not receive his title from the Catholic Church.

The doctor who cured the poorest patients died tragically in a traffic accident on June 29, 1919, an event that occurred in La Pastora, Caracas.

However, the faith of the Venezuelan people increased due to the fact of the miracles attributed to this character, especially those related to healing the health of the sick, so since 1949, a movement began in the country to promote his canonization.

It was initiated by the then archbishop of the Venezuelan capital, Monsignor Lucas Guillermo Castillo, who was supported by the faithful who adored him.

In 1986, Pope John Paul II granted him the title of Venerable Servant of God, after the Congregation for the Cause of Saints analyzed the opinions of those who knew him and the Supreme Pontiff approved the Decree of Heroic Virtues to consider him venerable.

On April 30, 2021, José Gregorio Hernández was elevated to Blessed, a position he shares with Mother María de San José, Mother Carmen Rendiles Martínez and Mother Candelaria de San José.

However, "until now none of these Venezuelans has reached the level of saint or fourth phase of sainthood, known in the process of the cause as canonization," says a work published in Últimas Noticias called More than 20 Venezuelans are heading to the altars.

Which places José Gregorio Hernández as the first saint of the Catholic Church in Venezuela, given the announcement made by the highest representative of the Vatican.

To reach canonization, the People's Doctor had to undergo verification of two miracles. The first of them was having restored health to a girl, who was shot in the head.

On March 10, 2017, Yaxury Solórzano, who at that time was only 10 years old, was hit by a shotgun bullet with multiple pellets behind his right ear, when they were going to assault his father in San Fernando de Hurry up.

During the surgical intervention, the girl's mother fervently requested the intercession of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández before God, expressing that she felt his presence.

Although little chance of life was expected, the miracle began to become evident when, a week after leaving the operation, “Yaxury was walking around smiling, without complications,” as his surgeon says.

The second miracle was presented to the Holy See in 2022. In June of that year, a court of the Archdiocese of Miami (United States) concluded the investigation phase of the case of a Venezuelan man who was practically hopeless.

This person, while he was in the medical center, saw the image of the blessed twice and then was cured, “without any explanation,” said the vice postulator of the Cause of the Blessed José Gregorio Hernández, father Gerardino Barracchini still.

The significance for the country's Catholic faith and to know the opinion of the readers of Últimas Noticias Given this fact, in Datos ÚN We published a digital survey on our website and social networks.

It was active between Tuesday, June 25 and Friday, June 28 and had 1.296 people participating. These are the results.

Deep-rooted faith

In the consultation, the first thing we wanted to know is how many of our readers are believers of José Gregorio Hernández? The response was almost unanimous. 92,1% of those consulted stated that they are devotees of the Doctor of the Poor.

They trust in the blessed

Subsequently, we wanted to know if Venezuelans really go to the famous Venezuelan layman in search of miracles that help them improve their quality of life.

That is why in our second question we needed to know if they had ever asked José Gregorio Hernández for a favor.

As in the first question, a large number of participants responded affirmatively. In total, 86,5% have turned to him when they need help beyond this earthly plane.

2025 is the year of canonization

Like many Venezuelans who have followed this news, the question in the air is: When would the canonization act be? Our concern revolved around three possible moments. During this 2024, whose year there is still the second semester. By 2025 or after this date.

For 57% of those surveyed there is no doubt that the process will be carried out next year, while only 30,8% consider that there is a possibility that the event will take place this year.

To a lesser extent (12,2%) they consider that the Canonization Ceremony could take place after 2025.

The faith towards José Gregorio Hernández is genuine, since it is born from the depths of the people, so this fact marks a milestone in the country's Catholic history.
